My Goal to Self Publish My First Novel: Step 1

I have always want to write a book and see it on the shelf of my local library ever since I was in middle school. As someone with dyslexia who was bullied in school for struggling to read even by teachers this has always seemed to be the ultimate "I told you so". There is so much more to it though. I love creating stories and sharing them with my friends.  Here is the broad steps out what I plan to do to self publish my first book in case you are looking to do the same as well.  Finish writing the book. Proof read and edit Design cover Register pen name Set up website  Promote the book Publish to Kindle I plan to start out with just Kindle right now since it seems to be the easiest and as I get more experience I may branch out more into other options.  I still have to finish step one though which I expect to take the month amount of time. If I stay on track, I will finish my book around Christmas.

Find the Right Story for You to Write

Recently I was struggling to hit my goal of 1,000 words a day. I had fallen in love with this idea for a story I had, but then when I sat down to write it I felt like I was pulling teeth to get words on the page.  I thought I had more in me to flesh put the idea but when I went to mapping out the novel I realized I had one book and not two. That one book may also not hit the 80,000 word count I needed.  I shelfed it.  I had to put it on the back burner and work on something else. The idea will always be there for later when creativity is flowing just right for me to be able to write.   I decided to start a whole new story from scratch. All I had was a general idea in mind and started writing. I didn't map anything out or plan anything. I just started writing, coming up with it as I went.  I wrote 5,000 words in that first day! That is a crazy amount for me.  From this I learned to not be afraid to put a story down to work on a different one. I a...

Struggling to Find Time

How do you find the time to do something that you love when you have two kids and a full-time job.  Do I take time out of my lunch break? Do I take it out of the limited time that I have with my kids? Do I sacrifice sleep for it? I already use part of my lunch break to go get my oldest from school and the other half if I am honestly usually goes to the baby. I feel like I don't get enough time with my oldest as is, so I would feel guilty if I took more time away from her. I only get four hours of sleep right now as is so I am not in a position to lose anymore and still have a chance at being semi-functional.  Goal: Write 1,000 words a day If I manage to carve out just an hour a day to type a 1,000 words that is 365,000 words a year. That could easily be 3-4 novels. The take away is to set reasonable expectations of myself and to remember that even small steps get you to your destination eventually.
